“In my capstone course (Advanced Topics in Biomolecules/Biomolecular Research), the lab is group-based and relies on the passing off of information to group mates, which prepares you for research and other careers.”

Having always been passionate about the math and science fields, Sophia decided to double major in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and Mathematics knowing that she wanted to pursue research in applied mathematics as it relates to biological systems. She says, “While my research is more theoretical and computational, the biochemistry major allows me to understand the application and motivation behind mathematical biology.”

Since the Biochemistry/Molecular Biology major is relatively small, Sophia has been able to grow close with her peers within the major to create a tight-knit community. The learning environment within the program is very collaborative, and students are able to share ideas and support each other.

Sophia has been able to pursue various experiential learning opportunities through the BMB program. She was able to do a research experience for undergraduates at UC Davis in which she worked with professors as well as other students on a project in mathematical biology. Additionally, Sophia was able to study abroad for a semester at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, Australia. During this experience, Sophia took courses and also worked with a professor at the university on an applied mathematics project. Sophia has appreciated the faculty within the Biochemistry/Molecular Biology program for communicating these types of outside experiences to students and being supportive in finding opportunities for students that will support them towards a career path.

Sophia is choosing between PhD programs for after graduation, and the professors within the BMB program have been very helpful to her in talking through grad school decisions to find out which program might be the best fit for Sophia and her future plans.

On campus, Sophia is also involved with handbells and tutoring.
