“The professors come from a variety of backgrounds that help get different perspectives and different learning techniques.”

Originally planning on a major in Biology and a career in physical therapy, after coming to Gustavus Lakesha realized that nursing was a better career option for her. After working in an assisted living facility, she noticed what a special impact that she could make through nursing, and knew that through the Gustavus Nursing program, she would receive a holistic education and become the best nurse that she can be. Lakesha describes the environment in the Nursing Department as diverse, with faculty coming from a wide variety of experiences and specialties. She appreciates the hands-on and interactive nature of the department, as well as the small class sizes which foster a sense of community within the Nursing cohort, saying “It helps the learning environment and great bonding while going through the program”. Lakesha has also enjoyed the clinical experiences that she has had outside of the classroom, in which she has had opportunities to apply the knowledge that she learned in class and practice skills in a real-life setting. She has had opportunities to practice her skills in a variety of facilities and experiences multiple different nursing environments. Through these experiences, students are able to connect with people and get set up with internship opportunities, such as the internship that Lakesha will be doing this summer in the Cardiac Unit of Mercy Hospital. She also appreciates the Nursing Department faculty’s support and guidance throughout her classes and when thinking about future plans. Outside of the Nursing Department, Lakesha is also involved on the Gustavus Track and Field team.
