“[Political Science faculty] have all been so kind, and I know that if I need help in the future, whether for a reference or even just advice, I could go to any of them.”
Alex aspires to have a career as a politician, hoping to work with people and help them. Alex decided to pursue a double major in both Political Science and Philosophy, believing that “Politics and ethics should never be far apart from one another.”
In an environment that could easily become polarized and tense, Alex feels that the Political Science faculty create peace and understanding among their students. Alex says that the department ensures “that even if there is disagreement, it is civil and people can still get along.”
Alex appreciates the faculty of the Political Science Department, and views them as mentors and people that she can go to for help with academics, as well as just for life advice.
Within the classroom, Political Science faculty build an atmosphere that fosters open discussion and an opportunity for all ideas to be heard. Faculty encourages students to look past differences and be able to see others as human beings, which is something that Alex feels is very important for Political Science courses. In the future, Alex hopes to find an internship in politics and possibly spend a semester in Washington DC. These are experiences in which she will use skills gained in her Political Science classes and have more enriching learning experiences outside of the classroom.
Outside of academics, Alex is also involved on campus with the Gustavus Wind Orchestra, Lucia Singers, and the Swing Dance Club.
