Kat Cárdenas ’24

“The Gustavus faculty has allowed me to gain experience in Psychology, provided me with many courses to expand my knowledge in the field, and provided me with information on internship opportunities throughout my time at Gustavus.”

Having decided on a Psychology major in high school, Kat was initially drawn to Gustavus due to its Psychology program. She especially was drawn to the undergraduate research requirement within the program.

Through a major in Psychological Science, Kat has also been able to incorporate her minor and passion, Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies, into a focus on the psychology behind sexual assault. Kat was able to explore this interest further in a course titled the Psychobiology of Sex and Gender taught by Professor Kayla De Lorme. This class facilitated interesting class conversations and perfectly aligned Kat’s interests in both Psychology and Gender & Sexuality.

The Psychological Science Department has given Kat various opportunities for outside learning and experience. She is a research assistant for Professor Lucie Holmgreen, which has given her experience in conducting research and interpreting data. She also works with the Human Resource center, which has given her more experience with communication, organizing data, and problem solving. Additionally, Kat plans to participate in an internship this summer at the Washburn Center for Children, which was arranged with the help of Professor Marie Walker.

Kat appreciates the faculty in the Psychological Science Department for helping her seek experiential opportunities, and also for creating a supportive environment in the classroom. She especially has appreciated Professor Patrick Heath, saying, “His positive attitude makes the classroom an enjoyable and comfortable environment.”

Through her various experiential learning opportunities and course material within the classroom, Kat feels that the Psychological Science Department has prepared her for a future career. She says, “Leaving Gustavus, I will have a well-rounded education and opportunities to complete work in my desired psychology specialty, leaving me feeling prepared for my future.”

Outside of her work within the department, Kat is also involved on campus with American Cancer Society, Big Partner Little Partner, Gustie Greeters, OLAS, Gustie Mentorship Program, and Wednesday Friends.
