Dance major, Astrid Axtman, describes the experience of creating and performing a dance piece.
It felt empowering to be trusted and given full resources to create and produce a feature dance with live music, videography, and costuming. To create this piece I made four primary phrases that I taught to dancers and then manipulated–substituting and combining them with movement I made in the rehearsal process. I was challenged to both make great choreography, and to think strategically about how to craft rehearsals and rehearsal spaces that would allow for productive work. While I have crafted movement, this project helped me to claim the name of choreographer for myself. Making this piece helped me to explore a piece of me that, once hiding, is now realized.
