“The Athletic Training faculty have provided me with the tools to succeed in my future by really caring about me not only as a student but also as a person.”

Nico was drawn to the Athletic Training program through his relationship with his athletic trainer in high school, saying “he had a cool job, so I went to an informational meeting about the major and thought I would enjoy it.”

Nico points to hands-on learning and the community atmosphere as valuable parts of the program. He explains that students in the department “support each other in our education”, and faculty are “understanding and willing to help us learn at every opportunity.”

It was through the Athletic Training Department that Nico was able to get a summer internship with a minor-league baseball team – one of his favorite experiences within the program.

Of his peers within the department, Nico says, “Because it is such a small program, I have been able to get to know everyone very well. We not only do a lot of studying together, but we are also friends outside of school.” The Athletic Training faculty have also been an important part of Nico’s experience at Gustavus. He has formed valuable connections with both Dr. Westby and Dr. Green, who “have the ability to joke around but both really care about the education of everyone in the program.”

Alongside his Athletic Training major, Nico played baseball for his first three years at Gustavus.
