“In the classroom, we learn on our own but then come together to think things through in groups. We talk things through and build off one another which creates a better understanding in our course material.”
Nicole’s ability to pursue nursing while also being involved in athletics and music is what brought her to Gustavus in the first place.
A junior from Canton, South Dakota, Nichole has wanted a career in healthcare from an early age. Her plan was solidified when she heard about her mom’s career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She wanted to be able to have close relationships with people while making significant improvements to their lives and she decided that nursing was the right path to do this.
In the classroom, Nicole has appreciated the opportunity to build a better understanding of course material by collaborating with her peers. She enjoys how close the nursing community has become as a cohort, saying “we have been given the opportunity to get to know each other better and build a deeper connection with our classmates.”
Nicole has also appreciated the support that she has received from the faculty within the Nursing Department. She enjoys that the faculty encourage students in their coursework, saying “The faculty have really pushed us in our academic careers so that we will be able to be better nurses in our working career.” At the same time, she appreciates the understanding nature of the nursing faculty, saying they are mentors “who are very supportive and there for us whether we are in need or just have a simple question.”
One of her favorite memories within the Nursing Department was “wellbeing day” in which the nursing professors made soup for students and they were able to take a break from coursework to participate in fun activities with their professors and peers.
The supportive environment of the Nursing Department has made it easier for Nicole to participate in other activities on campus, including throwing hammer and shot put on the Gustavus Track and Field team and playing alto saxophone in the Gustavus Wind Orchestra.
