“[Education faculty] have challenged me to think critically, encouraged me to explore new ideas, and supported me in developing my teaching skills.”
Choosing to come to Gustavus primarily for the Education Department, Benjy decided to major in Health and Physical Education hoping to teach and coach at the high school level.
Throughout his time in the department, Benjy has felt supported both in learning how to teach, as well as in his specific field of health, and has developed relationships with professors in both areas. Through the Education Department, Benjy has also appreciated the opportunity to shadow a teacher and see what a day-to-day life was like, going to meetings and having daily interactions with other teachers and students. This experience helped to strengthen his career decision and gave him context for the work that he does in the classroom.
Benjy has appreciated Education faculty’s guidance in developing skills as a teacher, and particularly appreciates Professor Bonnie Reimann for her clear communication and the application of content to real-life situations. Through the department, Benjy also feels that he has developed other skills in critical thinking and understanding of theory and practice. With the development of these skills, Benjy feels more prepared for teaching and more confident in his skills, saying, “Overall, the faculty in the education department have played a crucial role in shaping me into a confident and competent future educator.”
Outside of the classroom, Benjy is also involved on campus with Big Partner Little Partner, Gustavus Football, and Language Buddies.
