“Having historical knowledge has helped me to understand the problems of the world today, and many of the things in my own life.”

Jonathan chose a major in history due to its implications for exploring the world through different lenses and perspectives. Throughout his studies, he has felt that through understanding of historical patterns, he has become better able to understand contemporary issues. He has also been able to draw many connections from his historical studies to his additional major in Japanese, which has given him insight into history across cultural contexts and a broader world view. Jonathan describes the atmosphere of the History Department as very supportive, and enjoys both the other students within his classes, whom he describes as open-minded, as well as the faculty within the Department. Within the department, Jonathan has also appreciated opportunities to practice research skills, such as in his history seminar class, in which students created a historiographical paper which analyzes various interpretations of a historical event. This specific project made Jonathan more comfortable reaching out to faculty, which he appreciated. Jonathan’s favorite professor within the history department is Professor David Obermiller, who he has appreciated during class, as well as for his help with exploring opportunities for post-graduation. As a whole, Jonathan feels that the department has given him many resources for pursuing future career opportunities, and the professors are always willing to chat with students and answer any questions that they may have. Outside of class, Jonathan is also involved on campus with the swim team and Big Hill Farm.
