“The faculty in LALACS have helped guide me into the correct direction that is needed for my career. They are always open to having a meeting in case there are doubts and will always provide you useful information and resources”
Abby Alvarado Morales is from Northfield, Minnesota, and is currently pursuing a double major in Psychology and LALACS (Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies). Her decision to opt for LALACS was influenced by the department’s outstanding faculty and staff, coupled with its seamless integration with her Spanish minor
She describes that coming to a private liberal arts college can be scary, but the learning environment within LALACS provides a feeling of value and inclusiveness. Morales states, “As a first-gen student it can be difficult to find classes that make you feel included, the LALACS classes for me have made me feel included and a part of the community.”
Morales’ had a favorite professor in LALACS that was always there to help her along the way. “I have been through some hardships and the professor always checked up on me and provided me with support that I have never received for another teacher”, Morales. The professors are so caring towards us and really do want you to succeed in life.
Her favorite class experience was SPA-320 because we got to discuss multiple cultures and dig deeper into their customs and traditions. One opportunity that LALACS brought her was volunteering with Latin American adults who wanted to learn Spanish. She shared that she got to interact with their children and provide support for them as well as allowing her to gain leadership skills and be a role-model towards the kids.
