Carson DeKam ’24

“Having people in your department who are committed to seeing you succeed and pursue your goals is extremely encouraging.”

Carson felt drawn to a major in Business Management as someone who feels he has the strengths needed to work in a fast-paced environment like business. Now, he has developed a passion for the content of his major and the environment within the Business and Economics Department.

Within the classroom, Carson appreciates that students are able to challenge the boundaries of the business world and think about things through multiple perspectives. He says, “I believe students are going to be well-equipped with the critical thinking skills to attack challenges head-on in order to navigate an uncertain business climate in the future.”

Carson enjoys the variety of course material within the Business and Economics Department, feeling like he is able to take something new away from each of his classes. He feels that with this set of skills, he has become increasingly prepared for a future career, attributing part of this to the liberal arts curriculum, which makes students “extremely prepared and equipped to handle the business world due to the variety of knowledge and education that they receive at this institution.”

The department has also given Carson opportunities to learn from businesses off-campus. Particularly, he points to his Marketing and Marketing Research class, in which he has been able to work with companies and business professionals outside of Gustavus. “These experiences are super beneficial to broadening my communication, organization, management, and collaboration skills.”

Carson is also grateful for the faculty within the Business and Economics Department for being encouraging and making him a better student and person. He appreciates the passion that his professors demonstrate, which has made him a more passionate Business Management major.

Aside from academics, Carson is also involved on campus in Gustavus Football, Tau Psi Omega, Order of Omega, and Gustavus Football Against Sexual Violence.
