“Music in particular is always experiential, and by performing and participating in local and global tours I learn both the importance of music but also the significance and impact of music on others.”
Having a minor in music has given Sophia the opportunity to integrate her three majors – Political Science, Spanish, and Latin American/Latinx and Caribbean Studies – into her passion for music.
She says, “I can apply what I learned in my Latin American history class to a new piece I am working on by an Argentinian composer, understanding the politics of the time and the culture of the piece to better perform and understand the music.”
Within the Music Department specifically, Sophia has found a supportive environment that focuses on experiential learning. She has appreciated the faculty within the department, specifically her cello professor Sharon Mautner-Rogers, who has been a supportive figure throughout her time at Gustavus. “From day one she has been nothing but supportive of both my creative, personal and career endeavors.” Through Professor Mautner-Rogers, Sophia was able to play her first semi-professional cello gig, and she feels that she has greatly helped her develop skills and confidence in performing.
Sophia has appreciated the faculty as a whole, not only within the Music Department but within all of her departments, as providing her with concrete and emotional preparation for a future career. The Music Department in particular has given her special opportunities to develop off-campus. Her favorite experience was a trip to Malaysia and Singapore with the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra. Throughout this trip, the ensemble had the opportunity to learn about Malaysian culture, all while continuing to rehearse and grow as an ensemble. The group was able to play for multiple schools in Malaysia, which was a special experience for Sophia. She says, “What could not be spoken with words, was understood with music. Music truly connects people, and it was a privilege to learn this through first hand experience.” The cultural experience that she had on this trip was something that she has been able to bring into her studies within other departments, and gave her valuable insight to bring into the classroom.
After four years of a well-rounded and integrated education, Sophia feels that she is more confident, knowledgeable and prepared for a future career. Outside of academics, Sophie is also involved on campus with the Gustavus Swim Team and Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority.
